Additional readings and activities

The interactive Trigonometry book develops formal trigonometry at a later level than this stage. Therefore, its chapters are not mandatory reading in Elementary I. To learn the initial concepts, use the classes and visual explorations in this track; The chapters of the book are on the Elementary II and High School tracks.

Start with the spins

At this stage, trigonometry does not yet need formulas. Observe spins, compare openings and draw pictures. The class on angles such as turns and corners is a good starting point: it introduces the quarter turn and the right angle.

Exploration route

  1. Do quarter turns, half turns and full turns; compare them to the hands of a clock.
  2. Mark right angles using the corner of a sheet of paper and look for other angles in the room.
  3. With the help of an adult and in a safe place, try the activity triangulation in the field. She uses a triangle of 45° to estimate a distance, without requiring the sine and cosine formulas.

The units in radians, the trigonometric cycle and the ratios between sides are for the steps following. It is not necessary to move on to these topics until you are comfortable with angles and triangles.
