When a fraction does not represent the exact number
An irrational is a real number that cannot be written as a/b, with a and b integers and b ≠ 0. √2 and π are examples. Its decimal writing is infinite and non-periodic. An approximation like 1,414 is rational, but it is not the exact value of √2.

The levels suggest a route. Come back to review when you need to. Geometry and finance are connections: not every number that appears in these applications is irrational.
