Laboratory of canceling tokens

Each positive chip is worth +1, and each negative is worth −1. Together, one of each type is worth zero. Choose positive 5 and negative 3, cancel the pairs and explain the balance.

The total amount of chips is different from the balance. The signs are written on each card.

Before dividing: the divisor must be non-zero; a division of integers can produce a fraction.

Your mission: cross zero

  1. Read the introduction to integers.
  2. Explore the line and operations.
  3. Investigate sign rule and powers.
  4. Use angle classes as a connection to geometry. The notable products are an in-depth study at the end of the signs class.

Change the starting point and variation. Observe the route as you cross the zero.

Challenge of the route

You start at −3, move forward 7 units, and then move back 2. Where does it end?

Check the strategy

−3 + 7 = 4; then 4 − 2 = 2. The end point is 2. The directions indicate the variation, and the sign of the dot indicates its position.

To move forward: explain why −5 is less than −2 and why subtracting −3 is equivalent to adding 3.
