Equal parts and fractions
A sharing needs equal parts
Divide a strip of paper into 4 equal parts and color 3. You painted 3/4 from the strip. The denominator 4 indicates how many equal parts we divide the whole into; the numerator 3 indicates how many of these parts were painted.
Different writings, same quantity
Half of a strip can be 1/2 or 2/4. Dividing each half into two parts does not change the painted section, just the number and size of the parts. Therefore, 1/2 = 2/4.
To compare drawings, use integers of the same size. Half a large bar can be larger, in quantity, than half of a small bar.
Folding challenge
Fold a sheet in half and then in half again. Open: how many equal parts appeared? If you paint a part, what fraction of the sheet will you have painted? What if I paint them all?
Check out the discovery
4 parts appear. One part is 1/4; all are 4/4 = 1 integer. No painted parts correspond to 0/4 = 0.
