Its mission: connecting representations

  3. Explore percentage, proportions, rule of three and rates.
  4. Progress to expressions and equations, connecting arithmetic to algebra.
A fraction can have several equivalent writings. Multiply numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number.

Recipe Challenge

A recipe uses 3/4 cup of milk. To make half the recipe, how much milk will you need?

Check the strategy

(3/4) × (1/2) = 3/8 cup. Dividing the quantity in half is equivalent to multiplying it by 1/2.

To move forward: explain why 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6 and why 1/2 is greater than 1/3 when the reference integer is the same.
