Discoveries itinerary

  • 1st and 2nd years: count objects, compare quantities and explore addition and subtraction with drawings.
  • 3rd year: form groups of ten, discover the value of the numbers and investigate multiplication.
  • 4th and 5th years: practice division with remainder, explain strategies and recognize odd and even numbers.

Start with introduction to naturals, go through the four operations and finish with the exercises. Geometry classes are complementary explorations.

Tens laboratory

Before messing around: how many tens and ones make up 24? Then represent 42. What changed?

Explore units, tens and hundreds. Ten ones make a ten.

Toy box challenge

You have 24 carts and you have won more 8. You want to store them all in boxes with 4 carts each. How many carts are there now? How many boxes will be needed?

Check the answer and strategy

24 + 8 = 32 carts. Since 8 × 4 = 32, 8 boxes are required. Draw the boxes and distribute the carts to check.

Ready to move forward? Explain addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using objects or drawings. If you still have doubts, repeat the activity with smaller numbers.
