The ruler has marks between the integers

An object can measure more than 1 centimeter and less than 2. The mark in the middle represents 1,5 centimeter: a whole centimeter and half a centimeter.

Five tenths make up half. Imagine adding that half to a whole.

Draw your ruler

Draw a segment from 0 to 2. Mark 1 in the middle and then mark 0,5 and 1,5. The gaps between these marks are the same length.

One pencil measures 12,5 centimeters and another measures 13 centimeters. Which is bigger? What’s the difference?
