Investigate who belongs in the range

Mount [−2, 3). Does the number −2 belong? And 3? And 0,5? Use the drawing to justify.

Explore the controls and explain what changed in your own words.

Its mission: to represent, model and justify

Start with the sets chapter. Then explore ranges, functions and statistics. To review quadratic equations or probability, go back to the Fundamental II track.

Domain Challenge

For f(x) = 1/(x − 2), with real inputs, what is the domain? How to represent it with intervals?

Check the justification

The denominator cannot be zero. The domain is ℝ without the number 2, or (−∞, 2) ∪ (2, +∞). Infinity is neither a real number nor an included end.

Data challenge

Compare the data sets 4, 5, 6 and 0, 5, 10. Do they have the same average? Do they have the same dispersion?

Check the analysis

Both have average 5. The amplitudes are 2 and 10, respectively. Therefore, the same mean can hide very different distributions.

To conclude: explain the constraints of a function and choose a statistical measure that helps interpret a set of data.
